Working at Hogwartz

For the last few weeks I have been working for accommodation at a hostel in Dunedin called Hogwartz.  Since I am paying for rent in Queenstown, this was the only way I could afford to stay and surf in Dunedin.

Hogwartz is one of the oldest buildings in the city and used to be a manor that housed the Dunedin bishop.  It is a really cool building, and the owners, Maya and Gilbert have done a ton of renovations to modernize the structure and interior.  There is a really cool staircase heading up to the building from the road.  It is nearly hidden by huge oak trees and tall shrubs. If you didn’t know to look for it you would easily miss the red rod iron gate and carved wooden sign that says Hogwartz.

I clean from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. everyday to stay.  I vacuum rooms and the communal areas and kitchens some days.  Other days I clean the bathrooms.  I share a room with Gowin, a German guy that works reception and a Japanese girl named Yuku that has been here off and on for over 3 years….which I’m still not sure how that is possible with visas.  There are other cleaners or whoofers that come through about every 2 weeks or so.

Hogwartz isn’t really a social place, which is a little disapointing.  The guests doen’t really drink or hang out together, like we did at the Unueku Lodge in Auckland.  Dunedin seems to be a place that many poeple kind of whisk through on there way to the southern most part of the island and Milford sound, so a community of people never really gets developed here.
